Where Are the Brothers?

Thursday, November 10th, 2005

Excerpt from Dr. Michael Eric Dyson’s book “The Michael Eric Dyson Reader”.

“Look at me,” the sister blurted in exasperation. “It’s Saturday night, and I can’t buy a date.”

She attended a black tie in Chicago that the 100 Black Men of Chicago sponsored. The even drew many of Chicago’s elite, prominent clergy, physicians, entrepreneurs, and politicians. Her skin was brown and smooth-all sweet chocolate dipped into sensuous ebony hues - and her sparkling eyes set like flaming candles above her arching cheekbones. Her hair was a stylish black splash, with her limbs elegantly gesturing and her hands delicately pointing as her painted, manicured nails punctuated her message. As we talked for half an hour, it was clear that she was not only drop-dead gorgeous, but also bright as all outdoors, down-to-earth but schooled, witty and urbane but a true home girl, used to the corporate game she played as an executive but wearing her status loosely. Highly intelligent, educated, perceptive, in love with her people, down for the cause, a lover of black men-and she was alone, by herself, without a date in sight on a Saturday evening that brimmed with romantic promise.

Nation of Islam and Christianity

Well, I tried to stay away from this particular topic for a minute, but hey, it’s another Saturday night, and I ain’t got nobody (I think she’s out with her Hula Hoop again)…LOLOLOLOL!

Once again, just a thought provoking post. I am NOT the chief representative for “Black Men of BSC”, or black men period. If you find a “Sauktoid” that is false, or not true, please feel free to correct it. I’m not perfect. . .. matter of fact, I tried to walk across a puddle of rainwater yesterday. . .and got my socks wet!

Stay Salty!

Wednesday, July 20th, 2005

by Kenneth Aveirls, Sr.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. ~Matt 5:13 - Mk 9:50; Lk 14:34,35 13 Mk 9:50; Lk 14:34-35

How could salt be that valuable? Listen to this. 40 million tons are required each year to fill our needs. In ancient Greece, a far-flung trade involving the exchange of salt for slaves gave rise to the _expression, “…not worth his salt.” Special salt rations were given to Roman soldiers which were known as “Solarium Argentums” the forerunner of the English word “Salary.” Thousands of Napoleon’s troops died during his retreat from Moscow because their wounds would not heal from lack of salt. The human body contains about 4oz. of salt. Without enough of it, muscles won’t contract, blood won’t circulate, food won’t digest and the heart won’t beat a beat. Without a doubt, salt is the essence of life. And Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the earth…”

1. Salt adds flavoring! It doesn’t take a lot of salt to flavor your stew. If you add too much salt, it becomes inedible. Salt is an interesting mineral. I’m told that the saltiest product on the McDonald’s menu is not the fries, but the milk shakes because salt makes a sweet thing taste sweeter. Too much salt, by itself, can make you sick. Yet without salt, you would die. When you talk about salt as flavoring for food, salt must be used in the right quantity.

Colossians 2:8-10

From a dank, poorly lit jail cell in Rome, the itinerant Elder from Tarsus writes a Pastoral Letter to the church folks at Colossae. Hmmmm. . .did I say jail? Yes! This member of the aristocracy,

Circumcised the eighth day
Of the stock of Israel
Of the tribe of Benjamin,
An Hebrew of Hebrews
As touching the law, a Pharisee,
Concerning zeal, persecuting the church
Touching the righteousness which is in the law. . . .blameless!

“Caleb stills the people and said,” Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, WE ARE NOT ABLE TO GO UP against the people; for they are stronger than we.” ~Numbers 13:30-31

Burn Your Ship!

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” ~Philippians 3:13-14

Five hundred years ago, Hernando Cortez sailed to conquer Aztec Mexico. Keep in mind the lengthy travails of an extended sea-voyage in that era. His men became disgruntled on the sea-trip, and some wanted to return home. They weren’t sure the promise of gold was worth entering the strange land. They finally arrived. When the supplies were safely unloaded on the beach – Cortez burnt the ships! This removed the possibility of quitting, and concentrated the energy and attention of his men on successful survival in the new land.

In Philippians 3 the apostle Paul made the same choice spiritually. His past, with its success and its shame, he chose to forget — he set fire to his ship! What mattered to him most was keeping his eyes on the goal of gaining Christ’s approval.

“Spiritual Necrophiliacs”

Wednesday, June 15th, 2005

by Ken Aveirls, Sr.

Ezekiel 37:8-14

A “necrophiliac” is a person who is in love, or obsessed with a corpse; dead things. A spiritual necrophiliac is a person who has lost their “fire”, and has elected to embrace the dead areas of their life!

- In a relationship, that you KNOW will not be beneficial to you – DEAD!
- Employed on a mediocre job – DEAD!
- Blaming your parents, or lack of, for being the way you are – DEAD!
- Having to get “high” to get up, and excessively drink to get “down” – DEAD!
- Filled with lust – DEAD!

Before you write the obituary;
Before you purchase the coffin;
Before you make the tombs your place of residence;
Before you embalm your dreams;
Before you read last rites over your love life;
Before you lay down in the sarcophagus of sickness;
